Under the Bridge

Today’s shot is of some locked up bikes in DUMBO. DUMBO is the name of a neighborhood in Brooklyn, created via the acronym Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. I took this shot because I was liking the grunge feel of the scene. You will notice the closest bike has a giant padlock and chain. I have never seen such massive bike chains until I got to New York. Apparently bike theft can be pretty common here.

Nice and gritty, I like it.

Great shot. DUMBO is wonderful. I shot there last November and need to get back. I also lived there, in the Eagle Warehouse on Old Fulton Street almost 20 years ago.
One tidbit from back then regarding bike theft. At that time, when I did a lot of cycling, the state of the art bicycle lock was the U-shaped Kryptonite brand. They automatically insured your bicycle against theft as long it was was secured with their lock. This guarantee was effective everywhere except New York city.

Great urban pic. Informative too, re. the name DUMBO. Thought the area was named after the elephant, would you believe!??(Doh!)

    Cheers for the comments all!

Jesse – Me too. After shooting we ate at a great little restaurant on Water Street.
Heath – I actually got inspired to go shoot down there after one of Brian’s great DUMBO shots from last week!
Mark – It’s one of my favorite areas to visit in the city. lol at the bike lock guarantee! I can understand… already heard of a few first hand stories of stolen bikes.
Bruce – We will have to get down there for a meal on your next visit to NYC!

Tobias this shot rocks. I’m loving it. I hate living in a squeaky clean new place like Orlando because you guys get all the cool stuff.

Looks like you need a torch to get that chain off, lol. Nice shot and grunge feel you gave to it.
